Background of the Study
Community-driven language planning emphasizes the active participation of local stakeholders in preserving and promoting indigenous languages. In Ibadan, Yoruba cultural centers serve as hubs for language planning initiatives that are rooted in community needs and traditions. These centers engage in activities such as language workshops, literary festivals, and cultural performances, all aimed at strengthening Yoruba language proficiency and cultural pride (Ogunleye, 2023). Unlike top-down approaches, community-driven planning allows for adaptive strategies that reflect local dialects, cultural nuances, and contemporary usage patterns. This bottom-up approach has proven effective in revitalizing language use by involving community members, educators, and local artists in the planning process. The study evaluates how these centers formulate and implement language planning strategies, measuring their impact on language use, cultural transmission, and social cohesion. It also considers challenges such as resource limitations and varying levels of community engagement, providing a comprehensive overview of grassroots language planning in Ibadan (Adeleke, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the innovative efforts of Yoruba cultural centers in Ibadan, community-driven language planning faces several challenges. Inconsistencies in resource allocation, limited formal support, and internal disagreements over standardization often hamper these initiatives. Consequently, the overall impact on language preservation and revitalization remains uncertain. This study aims to fill the gap by examining the effectiveness of community-driven strategies and identifying obstacles that diminish their potential. Understanding these challenges is critical for developing sustainable language planning models that truly reflect community aspirations (Ogunleye, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the language planning strategies used by Yoruba cultural centers.

  • To evaluate the impact of these strategies on language use and cultural identity.

  • To identify challenges and propose solutions for improved community-driven planning.

Research Questions

  • What language planning practices are implemented in Yoruba cultural centers in Ibadan?

  • How effective are these practices in promoting Yoruba language vitality?

  • What challenges impede successful community-driven language planning?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the potential of community-driven language planning to preserve Yoruba culture. The findings will guide local organizations, educators, and policymakers in enhancing grassroots initiatives, ensuring that language preservation is both sustainable and reflective of community needs (Ogunleye, 2023; Adeleke, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to community-driven language planning in Yoruba cultural centers in Ibadan and does not extend to institutional or government-led initiatives.

Definitions of Terms
